Scania to unveil a new truck generation

As part of their Q2 report, Scania officially announced the coming release of their new truck generation:

Scania to unveil a new truck generation

On 23 August, Scania will present its new truck generation, the largest ever launch in Scania’s 125-year history. Scania has developed a broad range of tailored products and service solutions, which help to reduce operating and maintenance costs and also boost vehicle uptime. The offer will be introduced in several phases, with a clear focus on different industries and customer segments, following a carefully planned schedule, where Scania’s current and highly regarded truck generation will be sold in parallel. The gradual introduction of the new generation will start with applications for trucks in the European longhaulage segment and will later be followed by additional truck variants.

SCANIA: Final Preparations for the Electric Road

Believe it or not, Scania’s electric trucks are now visible on the road in Sweden:

Outside Gävle in central Sweden, the last preparations are being made at the test strip for an electrically powered truck from Scania operating under real traffic conditions. “It’s amazingly quiet,” says test driver Therése Persson.

“In electric mode it gets totally quiet in the cab, that’s amazing,” says Therése Persson, one of Ernst Express’ drivers.

Scania is introducing flexible maintenance plans

Scania is taking a big step within vehicle maintenance:

Scania is now introducing the option for customers to have vehicles serviced based on flexible maintenance plans. Instead of service based on set mileage, vehicles are called in for service when the operating data indicate that maintenance is needed. This means the vehicle receives exactly the maintenance it needs and, in most cases, spends less time idle at the workshop. Scania has approximately 170,000 connected vehicles in Europe that can potentially begin using the service.

Scania Interim Report, January–March 2016

Scania released their Q1 2016 report earlier today. Some highlights:

Scania’s sales amounted to SEK 23.1 billion (+3% vs PY) and earnings for the first quarter amounted to SEK 2,295 m (+2% vs PY).

Higher vehicle volume in Europe and higher service volume were partly offset by negative currency rate effects and low capacity utilisation in the production system in Latin America.

Demand in the eastern and southern parts of Europe increased strongest, while some of Scania’s traditional major markets were stable at a high level.

Demand in Brazil is still very low and even though order bookings in Russia rose somewhat compared to the previous year, there are no real signs of recovery in Latin America or Eurasia.

Autonomous transport solutions open up a world of opportunities

When hearing ‘Autonomous Driving’ most people think of passenger cars. But there are huge possibilities also within Commercial Vehicles and heavy transports. See more in this article from Scania:

An autonomous transport solution covers much more than just the self-driving vehicles, and opens the door to a world of opportunities.

Scania has since many years been working with various technologies for increased vehicle automation, but this is just one piece in the transport automation puzzle.

“We’re working with what we call autonomous transport solutions, and self-driving vehicles are one of the tools at our disposal,” explains Tom Nyström, Senior Engineer at Scania. “It’s a complete system, handling logistics, the assignment of tasks to vehicles, and information sharing between vehicles and infrastructure. Each transport solution is individually tailored to the customer’s needs.”
